I began construction of this harpsichord in July, 2008, after purchasing well illustrated plans and instructions from the renowned harpsichord builder Jack Peters in Seattle, Washington; I finished it in late September. The making of this harpsichord was the most interesting project I have ever undertaken to build from scratch. I loved every minute of the painstaking work required to complete this fascinating instrument. What a joy to hear it played by a professional and to have the same person teach me to play the harpsichord.
A harpsichord is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. Unlike the piano which use hammers to strike the strings, it produces sound by plucking a string upward when each key is pressed. The harpsichord was widely used in baroque music. It became less popular following the invention of the piano, but its distinctive sound is still used in contemporary music.
The origin of the
harpsichord is unknown, but is known to have begun some time during the late
Middle Ages. The earliest written references to the instrument date from the
1300s and it is possible that the harpsichord was invented in that century.
This was a time in which advances in clockwork and other forms of early
pre-modern machinery were being made and thus a likely time for the
invention of those mechanical aspects that distinguish a harpsichord from a
psaltery.

If you have an opportunity to attend a performance by a musician on a harpsichord take advantage of it. A harpsichord produces a unique sound quite different than the modern piano.

Dwayne's This and That
The aim and final end of all music
should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of
the soul.
-- Johann Sebastian Bach Clavichord
This is a triple fretted clavichord built by Dwayne from plans by Jack Peters. The clavichord invented in the early fourteenth century is a European stringed keyboard instrument known from the late Medieval, through the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras. Historically, it was widely used as a practice instrument and as an aid to composition. The clavichord produces sound by striking brass or iron strings with small metal blades called tangents. This instrument has four octaves, C2 to C6. The case and legs are made from white oak, the naturals are purpleheart, and the sharps are hard maple. It is not for sale at this time. Will make to order.
